Local Stratford Info

Being one of the major centres identified in the London Plan, Stratford E15 is one of the main areas in East London and it is also situated in the London Borough of Newham.

Today Stratford is one of the largest areas in East London which also have great economical importance. However, in the past it was a small agrarian settlement in the ancient parish of West Ham. After some years, it became and industrial suburb and its population increased considerably. All this led to expansion of the area, which resulted in the flourishing of local economy. So, after the 19th and especially in the middle of the 20th century Stratford transformed into one of the most important commercial and cultural centres in London.

The area offers plenty of places where local residents and visitors of the area can spend some of their spare time. In Stratford there are two of the largest shopping centres in London – the Stratford Centre and the Westfield Stratford Centre. They are located of either side of Stratford station.

Stratford Centre is a large shopping mall opened in 1974. Considering the fact that it is open 24 hours a day, it gives local people different ways of entertaining themselves. You can find many flagship shops and chain stores in Stratford Centre, some of which are: 99p Styores, Nlue Inc, Burger King, CEX, Evans, H Samuel Jewellers, Holland & Barrett, KFC, McDonalds, and New Look.

Westfield Stratford Centre is the other one of the two largest malls in Stratford. It opened in 2011 and today it is considered to be the 3rd largest shopping centre in the United Kingdom. And did you know that it is also one of the largest shopping centres in Europe?

Some of the places that you may find interesting to visit are: the Evangelist Church of St John, Martyr’s memorial, Gurney Memorial Drinking Fountain, King Edward VII Public House and “Robert” the tank engine and some others.

Lately, the area is associated with the 2012 Summer Olympics, because it has become home to the London Olympic Park. The Olympic Park is a sporting complex built for the 2012 Summer Olympics, which contains the athletes’ Olympic Village and also several of the sporting venues.
