Local Forest Hill Info

Forest Hill is a residential area in South London. Its name derives from the landscape around the area and means “the forest with a big hill”. At first the area was called “The Common”. In the beginning it was scarcely populated, then a main road was built and more than fifteen big mansions were constructed. The contemporary name came later around the 1840s when the people decided to change the name of the local station which was called The Dartmouth Arms station.

When the places of the Crystal Palace had been changed, the development in western Forest Hill started at full steam with luxury houses and mansions. While in the area situated east from the railway, more modest houses were built because of the cheaper railway fares.

Some notable people connected with Forest Hill are: Edward Powys Mathers, Linda Agostini, John Lynn, Leslie Howard, Lionel Jeffries, Arthur Rhys Davids, W. Reginald Bray, Francis Rossi, Henry Charles Fehr, Vince Hilaire, E. W. Swanton, and others.

In you want to take a look at some sights or attractions you might want to see Honour Oak Park, for example. It is named after an event appeared in 1602 when Queen Elizabeth I had a picnick under a big oak which later became known as the Oak of Honour. Other interesting places to visit are: Brenchley Gardens (situated in the very heart of the district), London Snooker Club, The Hob Public House, St William Of York Church. Horniman Museum is situated on the border between Forest Hill and Dulwich. It exists thanks to a Victorian tea trader called Frederick John Horniman who opened the place. He managed to gather a beautiful collection of antiques, musical instruments and natural history which was placed in the museum.
