Local Blackheath Info

Situated in the south-eastern part of the capital, Blackheath got its name from the large meadows separating its neighbours- Greenwich and Lewisham. The meadows were very fertile, hence the black colour of the soil. Another story claims that the name derives for the fact that the huge number of dead during the Black Death of the 14th century were burned here, but this is just an urban legend.

Because of its strategic position even the Romans recognized the importance of the place and built a number of military camps there. This tradition was kept alive during the Middle Ages, when rebel gatherings, religious festivities and even Royal meetings took place at Blackheath.

Today the area is highlighted architecturally by a large number of Georgian and Victorian houses like the Paragon and the Cator Estate.

The Blackheath residents can also relish a multitude of local sports clubs in hockey and rugby. Kite flying and kite building are also very famous among the locals. And we should not forget that the first ever golf club in England was established right here by King James I in 1608.
